To make a prescription, you must first create a visit. Click on the "+" on the right and choose the type of visit you want.

If you only wish to prescribe, click on the "+" then on "Prescriptions" and your cursor will instantly appear in a new prescription in the encounter.

Otherwise, once in the visit, click on the "+" on the "prescriptions" line to create one.

Description of the fields to be filled in

Name: This is the field where you can search for a drug from the official list, or write it manually.
Posology: Write here the number of tablets/caplets/granules/etc. to be taken each time.
Format: The format can be chosen from the drop-down list.
Route: The route is to be chosen from the drop-down list.
Freq.: Write here the frequency (die, bid, prn, etc.)
Qty/days: Write here the quantity OR the number of days
Start: Today's date is automatically registered but it can be changed if necessary.
Strength: When a drug is chosen from the official list, the strength is automatically indicated. It can also be written by hand if the drug was written manually (if it was not on the list or if it is a master drug, for example).
Site: The site must be chosen from the drop-down list.
Type: The choices are Regular Drug, Narcotic and Controlled Drug.
Rep x: Renewal means the number of times the indicated quantity (or the number of days indicated) can be renewed, not the number of months. The renewal will always be self-filled with your default number of renewals (see this section of the guide about default renewal). You can change it as needed.
End: You can specify an end date if needed.


Filling a prescription

In the "name" field, start writing what you want to prescribe. A minimum of 4 letters is necessary to start a search. If the drug contains for example only 3 letters, write a "." at the end (ex: Yaz.). The list of medications comes from Health Canada and the RAMQ.

Once you have chosen the drug to be prescribed, the cursor automatically goes to the "posology" field and Ofys offers you the dosages, frequencies and quantities/days that are most often prescribed by all Ofys users.

You can also decide to enter all these fields manually. Fields in red are mandatory: Strength, Frequency, Quantity OR number of days, Renewals.

As mentioned above, the Renewals (Rep x) field will always be auto-filled with your default number of renewals (see this section of the guide about default renewal). You can change it as needed.

When the prescription is completed, if that is all you had to do, you can simply save the visit (with the green "Save" button above). There is no need to click "Ok" under the prescription.

If you have no other prescription to make but want to validate the prescription or to have the option to add it to your favorites (see section below), click on "Ok". The system will validate the prescription and notify you if there are any missing fields to fill.

To create a second prescription, click on "Ok +". The first prescription will be validated and a new blank prescription will be ready to be filled in.

Favorites

It is very relevant to add to your favorites all the prescriptions you use regularly (and in particular, the magistral preparations and those made manually, since they will not have to be rewritten). Favorites are personal to each user.

Adding a prescription to your favorites

After validating a prescription, you will see a star appear to the right of it. Click on it and that's it! A solid green star means that the prescription is one of your favorites.

To fill out your list of favorites quickly, you can even simply open a patient's summary (one of your patients or a colleague's) and click on the star to the right of the prescriptions you are interested in.

Prescribing a favorite

To prescribe a favorite, start a new prescription by clicking on the "+" or "Ok +". On the left, you will see a column entitled "Favorites". You can search this list to find the prescription you want to prescribe. Click on it and the fields will be filled in automatically. You can leave the prescription as it is or you can change it (e.g. you start from an existing favorite, but change the frequency).

You can have an unlimited number of favorites. To delete a favorite, simply click on the red trash can.

If you wish to print or fax the prescriptions right away, click on "Save" in the upper right corner of the visit (if your visit is not completed, you can finish it later by clicking on the "Edit" button that will appear in the upper right corner).

By default, the choice is "Print", but you can choose "Fax" from the drop-down menu. Then click on the "Rx" button to print or fax them. For more information on the fax integrated to Ofys, please consult this section of the guide (FR).

Other useful informations

Creatinine clearance

Above the prescriber, you see creatinine clearance. This is calculated using the MDRD (Modification of Diet in Renal Disease) formula and the lab results in the patient's chart. If we leave our cursor on "Calculated Clearance", we see the creatinine value and the date of the result that was used. When we print the prescription, the clearance is also indicated on the prescription.

RxVigilance

If you have a subscription to RxVigilance, when you prescribe a drug, simply click on the RxVigilance logo to access its product monograph. In short, you will have access to the usual dosages, comparative tables, information on possible side effects, pediatric dosages, etc.

RxVigilance also automatically analyzes a patient's profile when opening their file. At the bottom of the prescriber, you will be able to see if there are any alerts for that patient. When there is a red bubble, it means that the alert is related to the medication you are prescribing. To view the alerts, click on "See Alerts".

Dosage calculator

At the top of the prescriber, depending on what you are prescribing, there may appear a button that reads "Dosage calc". For example, if you prescribe Amoxicillin for a child, the dose calculator will automatically look up the child's weight and height in the child's chart to calculate the dose he or she needs (note: if the child's weight or height information is not up to date, it can be changed manually). You can choose from the different options and when you click "Ok", the prescription will automatically fill with the calculated dosage.
